Protective Coatings

What is a protective coating?  How are they different from regular paints? 

These are questions commonly asked by consumers who first come across the coatings field.    Imagine a coating that looks like paint yet is fire retardant, flexible, insulates, water proofs, reduces noise and so on.  Now, imagine this coating lasting many times longer than regular paint.   You save money through the energy reduction and protection of the substrate as well as not having to paint every 3-5 years.
